Incredible Relay !

Thanks to teammate Jason Lezak (LEE’-zak),
Michael Phelps has won his second gold of the Olympics. When Lezak
took over for the last leg of the 400-meter freestyle relay the
U.S. was in second place. Still trailing with about 20 meters to
go, Lezak made up the distance and finished in first, 0.08 seconds
in front of France.

Canadian Teams Sweep Outlaws…

It couldn’t be much worse for the Chico Outlaws. What was supposed to be the start of a resurgent stretch, where they played themselves back into contention, instead turned into a stretch that may have seen the Outlaws play themselves into baseball oblivion.

Chico was swept by both Calgary and Edmonton dropping to 0-7 in the second half of the season and 15-34 overall. The most grotesque of them all may have been the series finale Wednesday night in Edmonton.  With Chico leading 7-1 in the 7th inning, Greg Bicknell suddenly lost it.  The bullpen would try and rescue the game behind starter and turned salvager Trevor Caughey,  but the Cracker Cats would score the winning run in the bottom of the ninth.

The loss was the eighth in a row for the defending Golden Baseball League champs and almost renders their chances of a repeat title non-existent. The Outlaws will try and get back on track on Friday night when they send Chico-favorite Scott Navarro to the mound against the Reno Silver Sox.

Game time is 7:05 with Rory Miller and the pre-game show starting at 6:40 on ESPN 101.7 and AM 1340.

Outlaws get ready for Second Half…

The first half of the Chico Outlaws season is over.

THANK GOODNESS !

Not much went right for the defending Golden Baseball League champs. They were stung on opening night by a bullpen implosion and things didn’t get much better. But, there is reason for optimism as Chico gets ready for the second half.

First, their bats have shown signs of becoming better. Season long slumps from several key hitters made things very difficult for the group as they constantly found themselves trailing and paying catch-up.

Second, the Outlaws have made several whole-sale changes to their rotation. It doesn’t help when quality arms are signed by Major League organizations, but it is the nature of Independent Ball and the Outlaws will deal with it. Now is the time Chico will lean on veterans Greg Bicknell and recently-signed Scott Navarro.

Trevor Caughey has been a nice surprise coming out of the pen and has pitched well for Chico. They will need him to sustain his recent solid performance.

Third and most importantly, The Golden Baseball League breaks their season into two halves. If the Outlaws post-season hopes rested on having to make-up for their bad first half…..Jim Mora would be uttering those infamous words, “playoffs, playoffs, what do ya….playoffs.”

But, the playoffs are a distinct possibility. If Chico gets some solid pitching…continues the strides they made at the plate in the last few weeks, they should be right in the mix. Its not out of the question for a group of ball-players to catch fire for a month or so and roll into the post-season with all the confidence in the world……..

Just ask the 2007 Golden Baseball League Champs…….It can be done.

Kyle Woodruff drafted by the San Francisco Giants

Chico State pitcher Kyle Woodruff was selected by the San Francisco Giants in the 27th round of baseball’s amateur draft on Friday. It completes what has been a whirlwind year for the 6-6 right hander. Woodruff was removed from the starting rotation at the beginning of the year, but pitched very well at the end of the year as the Wildcats made their playoff push…..Woodruff says he was home alone, watching the draft on the internet…..when all of a sudden he heard his name…..

In Woodruff’s two years as a Wildcat he went 8-4 with 94 strikeouts in 120 innings pitched. He also garnered 5 saves all during the 2008 season.

Racing resumes at the Dollar

After a week off racing resumes at the Silver Dollar Speedway on Friday night. It is points race number 10 during the Feather Falls Casino Championship points series. Three divisions return to action with the 410 winged sprint cars, street stocks and wingless sprints.

Auburn’s Andy Forsberg continues to lead the 410 sprint car point battle, but he only holds an 11-point lead over former champion Sean Becker. Chico driver Jonathan Allard sits in third place.

The front grandstand will open at 6pm with the racing scheduled to begin at 7:30pm.

More home woes for Outlaws

A tough home-stand got a little tougher for the Chico Outlaws last night. Chico fell to 1-9 on the season after an 8-2 loss to the Orange County Flyers. Chico was outscored in the series 32-to-11.

The Outlaws have not had the consistency on the mound that they need at this point giving up 16 hits in the series finale. Chico will get a much needed day off and get back it tomorrow against the Long Beach Armada.  Chico will look to their ace Derrick Loop to get them over the hump. Game time is 7:05 and Rory Miller has the pre-game show at 6:35pm on ESPN 101.7/AM 1340.
